The talks between striking public health doctors and the Health Service Employers Agency (HSEA) have this evening ended without any progress being made, according to the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO).

No further talks are planned at this stage, and the three-week old public doctors' strike is set to continue.

The IMO's Director of Industrial Relations, Mr Fintan Hourihan, expressed disappointment with the outcome of the today's talks.

"We were led to believe that a serious effort was being made on the part of the HSEA and the Department of Health, but no new proposals were put on the table," he said.

"As of this evening, the strike continues," he added.

The IMO is set to meet tomorrow to discuss an escalation of the dispute.

Before the talks began, the LRC Chairman, Mr Kieran Mulvey, told representatives from both sides that, given the public's concern over the strike, it was incumbent on them to reach a conclusion as soon as possible.

The strike over pay and working conditions has hindered the State's efforts to set up a system to deal with the threat of SARS.
