The number three seed Novak Djokovic has beaten unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in today's Australian Open final to become the first Serb winner of a Grand Slam tennis tournament.

The 20-year-old Djokovic, who upset top-ranked Roger Federer in the semifinals, won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at Melbourne Park to end three years of dominance at the four majors by Federer and number two-ranked Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic is the first new Grand Slam men's champion since Nadal at the 2005 French Open and the only player other than Federer or Nadal to secure a major in three years.

He's also the fourth-youngest Australian Open men's champion since professionals were allowed to enter in 1969.

The 38th-ranked Tsonga, who beat four top-15 players before the final, was seeking to become the first Frenchman to win a Grand Slam title since Yannick Noah at the 1983 French Open.

The 22-year-old had never won more than three straight matches at a men's tour event before this tournament.
