Divers have recovered the body of a youth who was killed in a jet-ski accident on Sunday in Co Mayo.

The body of Alan Joyce (19), Ranaghy, Islandeady, Castlebar, was taken from Beltra Lake about 10 miles from Castlebar, just before 11am yesterday and brought to Mayo General Hospital for a postmortem.

It is believed that he had been a pillion passenger on a jet-ski which capsized near the shoreline at Glenisland village about 5pm on Sunday. The driver managed to get ashore but Alan failed to surface.

A major air and lake search and rescue operation, involving a coast guard rescue helicopter, Civil Defence personnel, gardaí and civilians got under way.

Alan was an apprentice plumber who worked part-time in Castlebar as a petrol forecourt attendant.

He was the youngest child of Islandeady couple, John and Mary Joyce who have two other children, Patrick and Leona.
