The Tanaiste spoke of the experience of her mother becoming a disabled person when she launched the first guide on careers advice to graduates with disabilities at Trinity College, Dublin, yesterday.

After her mother was confined to a wheelchair by a stroke, they were unhappy to find that disabled people had to enter the Department of Enterprise, Employment and Trade through a back car-park.

Ms Harney welcomed the transfer to FAS of responsibility for the training and employment needs of disabled people.

The guide is produced by the Association for Higher Education Access and Disability for career advisers in third-level institutions. It provides information on access to employment.
