Bucharest - Romania is to donate clothes formerly belonging to dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, Elena, to a colony of lepers, officials said yesterday.

The lepers in Tichilesti, south-eastern Romania, are among a number of recipients of the "slightly worn and old-fashioned" clothes, said the state agency which is selling off the his effects. Ceausescu, who was shot along with his wife during the December 1989 revolution in Romania, maintained throughout his rule that leprosy had been eradicated in the country.
