Diageo, which owns Guinness, today mirrored the sentiments outlined by rival drinks group Allied Domecq yesterday, saying that the company's prospects for the current year remain unchanged as the outlook for a sustained recovery of the world's economies is still unclear.

"There are signs of improvement in some markets, particularly in the US," said Diageo chief executive Mr Paul Walsh.

"Continued share gains, even in difficult markets, such as Latin America, provide further evidence that Diageo is well-positioned to achieve superior performance.

"Therefore, whilst recognisiing that we are only three months into the current financial year, we have not seen any trends emerging which would lead us to change our view of the company's future prospects," he told shareholders at today's AGM in London.

Yesterday, Allied Domecq said some of its markets remained uncertain and pointed to difficulties in the euro zone and the impact that the introduction of the euro may have on its business.
