Dentists have asked the Tánaiste, Ms Harney, if they can participate in meetings prior to the making of an order requiring them and other health professionals to display price lists.

The Tánaiste said she wanted to meet the Director of Consumer Affairs, Ms Carmel Foley, this week to discuss the technicalities of making the order under the Consumer Information Act.

Ms Foley has requested that Ms Harney make an order which would require doctors, dentists and allied health professionals to display their prices in the same way as hairdressers and restaurants are legally bound to do.

Mr Harney said she was very positive about the principle of it but wanted to discuss how they might make it a reality.

Yesterday, the general secretary of the Irish Dental Association, Mr Donal Atkins, wrote to the Tánaiste making a formal request to participate in her meetings with Ms Foley.

"As the national organisation representing the dental profession we believe that we are in a unique position to assist, in an informed manner, your deliberations prior to making an order under the Act," he said.

A spokeswoman for the Tánaiste said yesterday that any input from the organisations would certainly be welcome.
