A deep-sea port at Ross in Killala Bay, on the north Mayo coast, would provide a lifeline for the region's economy, a delegation told officials from the Department of the Marine in Dublin yesterday.

A Ballina Industrial Development Association delegation said the port plan had taken on a new dimension with the discovery of a gas field off the Mayo coast. It is seeking EU finding for the proposed port, which has the backing of industrialists in the west.
