Gardaí in Co Monaghan have issued an appeal for information on a road fatality whereby a 23-year-old male cyclist was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at Creevy, near Carrickmacross, on Tuesday night.

Gardaí said yesterday they were anxious to speak to anyone who travelled on the stretch of N2 Dublin-Derry road near the Carrickmacross bypass, between 10pm and 10.30pm.

The cyclist, whose name was withheld until all relatives were informed, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses to contact Carrickmacross Garda station on 042-969 0190, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Gardaí in Monaghan have also renewed an appeal for information about another fatal hit and run near Clontibret, over a month ago, in which pedestrian Fintan Traynor (20) from Lemgare was knocked down and killed on a road near his home. The vehicle involved in that collision has still not been traced.
