Two people held over Sligo death released without charge

Body of musician Martin ‘Matt’ Kivlehan was discovered on Monday afternoon

Two people arrested on Monday in connection with the death of Martin “Matt” Kivlehan in Sligo town, have been released without charge.

The body of musician Mr Kivlehan (59) was discovered at his home on Holborn Street, on Monday afternoon.

A knife was recovered by gardaí in the area. A postmortem later confirmed Mr Kivlehan died as a result of stab wounds.

Two people were arrested in connection with his death on Monday night. A man in his late 20s and a woman in her mid-20s were questioned by gardaí in connection with the case. They were released without charge yesterday.

A Garda spokesman said a file has been prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Following the postmortem, gardaí said they were treating Mr Kivlehan’s death as a murder. The results were not being released “for operational reasons”.

Mr Kivlehan, who was well known as a musician, had been a skilled carpenter and cabinetmaker. Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Rosaleen O’Grady said the people of the town were shocked. His funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

Investigating gardaí are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Holborn Street area between 10pm on Sunday night and 1pm on Monday.
