Teenager dies after car crashes into wall in Co Cork

A teenager from north Cork has died after the car he was driving crashed into a wall on the outskirts of Charleville on Wednesday night.

The 19-year-old from Newtownshandrum was fatally injured after his car clipped a kerb and struck the wall on Smiths Road at around 11.10pm.

Three passengers in the car, two teenage girls from Newtownshandrum and Charleville, and a teenage boy from Croom, were injured in the crash and taken to hospital in Limerick.

The road was closed for a period to allow a garda forensic crash investigator to examine scene and diversions were put in place. The road has since re-opened.

The coroner has been notified.

October has been a particularly deadly month on the State’s roads with a total of 19 people killed. Nine people died following crashes last week.

At least 159 people have died on roads across the Republic this year, up 31 from the same time last year.
