Search for ‘hand or arm’ in Co Clare canal called off

The search for a body part in a canal in Co Clare has been stood down after two days.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene on Tuesday following a report of a “hand or arm” seen in the water in near the Ardnacrusha power station.

A motorist, who was driving over the bridge close to the power station, reported seeing a body part on the surface of the water to Limerick fire control on Tuesday at about 4.30pm.

Fire services, Coast Guard and marine rescue services searched the area for two days.

The ESB power station turned off its turbines during the search.

Valentia Coast Guard spokesman said a decision was made, in conjunction with gardaí in Henry Street in Limerick, to call off the search.

He said nothing of significance had been found by divers or other crew members.
