Public-interest law in focus

Free Legal Advice Centres (Flac) is organising a half-day public-interest law seminar on June 20th that will bring together three US lawyers and one Irish lawyer to speak about the work of their organisations and to reflect on the relevance of public-interest law.

The event will be co-chaired by Flac's Noeline Blackwell and Prof Walter Walsh of the University of Washington, Seattle.

Speakers include Sue Donaldson of the Washington Appleseed Centre for Law in the Public Interest, Frank Murphy of Ballymun Community Law Centre, Michele Storms of the Gates Public Service Law Scholarship Programme and Douglas Lasdon of the Urban Justice Centre, New York.

The conference will take place from 9.30am to 1.15pm at the Morrison Hotel, Dublin, and registration is free.

Conference on self-advocacy

Inclusion Ireland, the national association for people with an intellectual disability, will host its annual self-advocacy conference, My Voice . . . My Choice, on Wednesday, June 18th, and Thursday, June 19th, at the Carlton Shearwater Plaza Hotel in Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

The majority of speakers and attendees will be people with an intellectual disability. Themes include: "being included"; "my journey to independence"; "peer advocacy" and "the right supports in my life".

Minister for Disability John Moloney and Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore will also speak at the conference.

Talk on European economy

The Institute of European Affairs is hosting a lecture by Barry Eichengreen, Pardee professor of economics and political science at the University of California, Berkeley, entitled 50 Years of the European Economy, at 1.30pm today in the institute's offices on North Great George's Street, Dublin. Prof Eichengreen is a renowned economist and author of many publications.
