Garda charged with fighting in street while off-duty

An off-duty garda, his brother and another man accused of getting involved in a street fight last summer have appeared in court in Limerick.

Adrian Joyce, (31), from Claremorris, Co Mayo, appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday charged under Section 16 of the Public Order Act.

Garda Joyce (above), who is based at Pearse Street station in Dublin,
is accused of causing an affray by using or threatening to use violence on O'Connell Street in Limerick on July 7th last year.

His brother Nicholas Joyce (40) with an address at Warrington, Lancashire, north-west England, and 27-year-old David McCarthy from Merval Drive, Clareview, Limerick, also appeared in court charged with the same offence.

Sgt Gerard Staunton gave evidence of charging the three men at Henry Street Garda station yesterday. The court heard they gave no reply to the charge.

The court was told there was no objection to bail and the State did not seek any special bail conditions.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly remanded each of the accused on bail on their own bond of €500 to appear again on April 2nd.
