Rugby commentator Ryle Nugent fined for speeding

RTÉ head of sport to pay €100 for driving offence committed on Christmas Day

RTÉ head of sport Ryle Nugent has been fined €100 for speeding on Christmas morning.

The rugby commentator appeared in court on Wednesday on a speeding charge for driving in excess of the 60km/h limit on the N11 in Stillorgan in south Dublin at 8.42am on December 25th, 2014.

A Go Safe speed detection operator told Judge John Brennan at Dublin District Court the sports journalist’s car was detected travelling at 75km/hr in a 60km/hr zone.

A fixed penalty notice was sent out but it appeared Nugent had moved address and did not notify the motor tax office. As a result a summons was issued.

The broadcaster produced his licence and apologised “for wasting the court’s time”.

He explained to the judge he had not received the fixed penalty notice because he had moved house but once he found out from his former neighbours that gardaí were looking for him, he made contact.

The judge noted he had turned up to face the case and gave him a €100 fine which is to be paid within three months.
