A man appeared at a sitting of Longford District Court on Tuesday afternoon charged in connection with the death of Brigid Maguire in Ballynacargy last Saturday.

Danny Keena (53), with an address at Empor, Ballynacargy, Mullingar, Co Westmeath appeared before judge Seamus Hughes charged with murdering Ms Maguire at Main Street, Ballynacargy, Co Westmeath on November 14th.

Det Sgt Brian Willoughby told the court the accused had been charged at Mullingar Garda station and replied after caution that he had: “nothing to say”.

The court heard the DPP had directed the accused be returned for trial at the Central Criminal Court and the State’s application was that Mr Keena be remanded in custody to appear at Harristown District Court next Friday.

At the request of Mr Keena’s solicitor, Trish Cronin, the judge directed the accused be psychiatrically assessed.
