CRH's chief executive today said translations of transcripts means it is not certain if allegations were being made against CRH over a $1 million (€827,000) "bribe" a Polish lobbyist claims to have made to a former Polish government minister.

Mr Liam O'Mahoney said the transcript of a Polish parliamentary commission of inquiry was ambiguous and it was not clear allegations were being made about CRH.

However, in the event of such allegations being made, Mr O'Mahoney said the company would absolutely refute them.

Mr O'Mahoney said this morning CRH did not pay any money directly or indirectly to Polish government officials in relation to this deal, did not authorise any payment and was not aware of any payment.

Polish lobbyist Marek Dochnal, claims he arranged a $1 million bribe for Poland's former privatisation minister, Wieslaw Kaczmarek.

CRH has said its only contact with Mr Dochnal was in connection with the purchase of his company's stake in a holding company prior to the privatisation of Polish cement plant, Cementownia Ozarow, in 1995.

At the same inquiry Poland's first lady, Jolanta Kwasniewska, said Mr Dochnal had arranged a meeting at which CRH agreed to give 500,000 zloties (€125,000) to her charity, Communication without Barriers, the biggest single donation it received in 1997.

Mr O'Mahoney said the company made such donations in every country it operated. "In any country in which we operate we make significant charitable donations to the local community and to various recognised charities."
