A Dublin youth attacked an elderly man with a bottle in the course of two house burglaries within the space of 30 minutes, a court was told yesterday.

The teenager (16) was brought before Dublin Children’s Court charged with two counts of burglary following his arrest in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Garda Adrian O’Reilly said the boy was arrested “on suspicion of burglary” at the Navan Road, Cabra. He was held at Cabra Garda station because neither of his parents could come to collect him.

No parent was present during the proceedings yesterday, where Judge Ann Ryan heard that the boy’s father had gone to the wrong court.

The teenager has already been barred by the court from parts of Dublin city centre in relation to other charges.

“I have to stay out of Dublin 1 and Dublin 2,” the boy told the judge.

Judge Ryan remanded him in custody to appear again today and was told that the defence lawyer would get in touch with the boy’s father.
