Council wins 10 decrees in water charges cases

THIRTY people appeared before Balbriggan District Court yesterday for non payment of water charges

THIRTY people appeared before Balbriggan District Court yesterday for non payment of water charges. They had been subpoenaed after allegedly failing to pay water charges to Fingal County Council for 1994 to 1996.

Judge Brian Kirby dismissed the first case but granted decrees in the council's favour in relation to 10 others. Each decree was for arrears of £255 plus costs and VAT. Two cases were dealt with by consent and the remaining have been adjourned for mention on May 6th next.

Outside the courthouse campaigners spoke against having to pay the charges and in court a number said they were already paying tax and that should justify use of the water.
