A 26-year-old Cork man has been remanded in custody on charges relating to the seizure of cannabis resin with an estimated value of €750,000.

Mr Derek O'Connor, Kilalla Gardens, Knocknaheeny, Cork City, was arrested after a van he was driving was stopped at a Garda checkpoint outside Fermoy on Monday evening.

A search by uniformed officers led to the discovery of 50 kilos of cannabis resin.

Mr O'Connor was charged at Cobh District Court today with possession of the drugs, and possession for sale or supply.

He was remanded in custody with consent to bail.
