HEAVY falls of rain in the south and south east have resulted in the death of a Cork man who fell into a partially constructed tank flooded by rainwater.

Mr Ronnie O'Shea (44), from Faha West, Bantry, Co Cork, went to check the tank at the back of his home shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday night. A Garda spokesman said the man slipped and fell into the tank containing about 10 feet of water.

Clonmel and Carrick on Suir in Co Tipperary yesterday had some respite from the rain. There was a tidal flood in Carrick on Suir yesterday morning which blocked traffic along the river quays.

Gardai at Clonmel said yesterday was drier than earlier in the week but last night it began raining again and the water was rising above the quays. A small bridge at Killusty in Fethard was washed away.

In Waterford and Wexford, yesterday was drier but Waterford gardai said that slight flooding was expected last night and early this morning.

The Meteorological Service said the wet and windy weather would continue during the weekend, although there would be bright dry spells in most parts today.

The spokesman said further flooding was possible in parts of the country, especially in the south and south east where the water tables were already high.
