A young Cork man who died at the weekend when he fell from a wall into the sea at Glenbrook, Co Cork, has been named by gardai.
Mr David O'Mahony (21), of The Meadows, Passage West, Co Cork, was sitting on a sea wall at Glenbrook with two friends at 2 a.m. on Saturday when he lost his balance and fell four feet into the sea. He appeared to get into difficulties immediately. His two friends jumped into the sea in an attempt to save him but they also found themselves in difficulties and had to be helped to safety.
Passers-by alerted the fire brigade services as Mr O'Mahony's friends were trying to rescue him and they were later brought to safety by members of the Cork fire brigade.
A Naval Service helicopter and naval divers searched for Mr O'Mahony's body and at 8 a.m. it was discovered about 300 yards from where he fell into the sea.
Mr O'Mahony was well known in sporting circles in Passage West and was a member of the local junior football team.
A championship fixture between Passage West and Whites Cross, due to have been played on Saturday evening, was cancelled as a mark of respect.
The dead man's remains were taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination was carried out at the weekend.
Local people in Passage West have complained for some time that the low sea wall could be dangerous, especially in windy conditions.
There have been calls for Cork County Council to erect a safety railing at the wall.
Also on Saturday, a man and a woman who fell into the River Lee near Jurys Hotel, on Cork's Western Road, were rescued when a member of the Cork fire brigade pulled them from the river.
They were treated in a city hospital and later released.
