The Communications Workers' Union has appointed Mr Con Scanlon as general secretary. Mr Scanlon, from Moyville, Co Kerry, succeeds Mr David Begg who has joined the aid agency Concern as its director. Mr Scanlon was assistant general secretary and before that a technician with Telecom Eireann. He is a former five-term president of the Communications Union of Ireland, one of the unions which merged to form the CWU.
He said he wanted to ensure that changes within An Post were done in a way supported by the company's staff; the successful completion of the negotiations for a substantial employee share holding in Telecom Eireann and the continued recruitment of members in the private sector.
