Motorists are being urged to drive with care today as overnight freezing temperatures left roads hazardous in many parts of the country.
AA Roadwatch is reporting several crashes on the N2 Ashbourne bypass in Co Meath due to icy conditions.
A garda spokesman said extreme care was needed in the area, although none of the accidents were serious. "There have been a number of crashes on the Ashbourne bypass and N2. "None are serious that I'm aware of," he said.
AA is also advising of treacherous conditions on the back roads of counties Monaghan, north Leitrim, Westmeath, Roscommon, Sligo, Kilkenny, Carlow, Longford and Kildare.
Snow is also reported to be falling in parts of Donegal. "Extreme care needed due to icy road conditions in parts of the country," an AA spokesperson said. "Back roads and sheltered areas are particularly icy.
"Most of the main roads have been treated. Keep your speed down and a safe distance from the vehicle in front at all times."
Met Eireann said the cold snap is to be replaced with milder weather as the day goes on. Further wintry showers in the west will give way to rain which will spread to all parts by late afternoon.
