columnist Mr Neal Travis said the former president "wants the ultimate getaway, a villa in the bucolic County Kerry village of Kenmare".

He said the village "is described as a little bit of paradise at the head of a bay where the Gulf Stream warms the climate".

Mr Travis said Mr Clinton got to know about Kenmare from Taoiseach Mr Bertie Ahern, who has holidayed there often and is looking to buy a house in the area.

Mr Clinton is set to get a record advance of over £7 million for his memoirs. Ending months of speculation, Mr Clinton said last night he would write his memoirs for publisher Alfred A Knopf.
