A clean-up is underway across Mayo and Galway this morning after overnight flash flooding caused hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage to roads and bridges in the west.
Heavy rain last night rendered many in Mayo impassable while landslides caused extensive damaged to roads and bridges, with the most badly affected areas being close to the towns of Westport and Newport.
While the major roads across Mayo have now reopened, flooding is still being reported on smaller roads in the region and gardaí have urged motorists to drive with caution.
The fire services were involved in a number of operations overnight including one incident in a small island of the Connemara coast in which a house was extensively damaged after being struck by lightening.
A mother and son living in the house on Gorumna were unhurt in the incident.
