Jordanian security forces fired tear gas and used armoured vehicles to drive back thousands of anti-Israeli protesters along the border area overlooking the occupied West Bank.

More than 20,000 protesters had driven to the border town of South Shouneh, 7 km from the Allenby Bridge, in a symbolic march to denounce Israel and rally for the right of return of Palestinian refugees.

Witnesses said the clashes began when dozens of anti-riot police prevented the marchers from proceeding to the town centre, first using water cannon and then tear gas.

Some protesters hurled stones as hundreds of anti-riot police fired more tear gas in a stampede which left dozens injured.
