Schoolchildren from Carndonough Community School in Co Donegal, were detained briefly in hospital in France last night after the bus in which they were travelling collided with a bridge outside Strasbourg.

The double-decker bus was taking 53 Irish children and seven adult minders who were on a week's holiday, to a local bowling alley. Seven of the children sustained injuries after the top deck of the bus hit the road tunnel which had 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) clearance.
