The Israeli army fired explosive shells at a village in the southern Gaza Strip early this morning in response to gunfire, seriously injuring a five-year-old Palestinian girl, hospital officials said.
Israeli shells landed at the entrance of a kindergarten in the village of Abasan east of Khan Yunis, near the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel, witnesses said.
The five-year-old was injured by shell splinters and taken to a hospital in Khan Yunis.
Another shell, fired in response to gunfire, damaged a mosque in the village.
An Israeli was also injured while working on a road in Israel near the West Bank town of Qalqiliya, the Israeli army said.
Palestinians shot the man in the leg and hand, it added.
