Another fresh wave of Celtic fans was heading for Seville today, with the clock ticking towards the Scottish football club's biggest match for a generation.

Around 23,500 faithful are expected to fly from Glasgow and Prestwick airports in time for the showpiece UEFA cup final against giants Porto on Wednesday.

Thousands more are expected to travel to Spain from elsewhere across Britain and Ireland, swelling the numbers to more than 50,000.

The mass exodus began early with hundreds of fans already in Spain, seeing the sights and soaking up the atmosphere ahead of the game.

The green and white army will take to planes, trains and automobiles over the next 48 hours as the Glasgow club bids to become the first Scottish team to lift the UEFA cup.

Fans were also travelling from as far afield as the US, Australia and the Far East for the club's first European final in 33 years.

But less than half of those travelling to Seville will have a ticket for the showpiece match at the 52,000 seater Olimpico Stadium.

Both clubs were awarded 15,700 tickets. Thousands more were snapped up on the Uefa website by fans who gambled on their team making the final at the quarter-final stage of the competition.

In a bid to ease the congestion, Celtic has urged fans who do not have a ticket not to travel to the stadium.

Such has been the interest generated by Celtic's European campaign the club has estimated that by today it will have sold more than 45,000 new shirts since last Wednesday.
