CAVAN County Council, ordered two weeks ago to repair a potholed road, was yesterday granted a stay of six months on the High Court order.

Miss Justice Carroll put the six-month stay on her order compelling the council to repair the road after the council said it was appealing the decision to the Supreme Court.

She added that if the council wanted an extension of the stay, it would have to apply to the Court.

34 people living close to a six-mile stretch of road between Ashgrove and Staghall, Belturbet, sued the council.

Before giving judgment, Miss Justice Carroll visited Co Cavan to see the road. When she gave her decision two weeks ago, she said that if the roads had deteriorated since she saw them, they must be nearly impassable.

It was learned later that lawyers for the residents are likely to go the Supreme Court in the new year to seek an early date for the appeal hearing.
