The Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) has urged the Government to set up a national forum to discuss immigration issues before drafting the new residency and immigration Bill.

In a letter to the Government the ICI asked that a forum be established to develop "a managed, comprehensive immigration policy for Ireland" following the success of the recent citizenship referendum. The forum should be set up before the residency Bill is introduced in the Dáil next year, the ICI said.

Speaking on World Refugee Day yesterday, the executive chairwoman of the ICI, Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, said the forum would allow the development of appropriate procedures for handling immigration.
