The forthcoming budget must contain improved pensions, services and opportunities for older people, Age Action said today.

The national network on ageing and older people added that the State Pension must be increased so that "no pension is in consistent poverty".

Age Action chief executive Robin Webster told his organisation's AGM at the Croke Park today: "Services for older people and their carers must be increased and improved to ensure that no older person has to leave their own homes for lack of services in the community.

"The opportunities for older people for social contact, personal development and community participating must be expanded significantly," added Mr Webster.

Ms Máire Hoctor, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children with responsibility for Older People, said people in older age groups in this country had made an invaluable contribution to all aspects of Irish life.

"There is no doubt that society benefits enormously from the presence and participation of those who have seen what life has to offer," she said.

Age Action chairman Tony Condon identified age discrimination as a key issue which had to be tackled.

"We are making considerable progress in raising awareness about discrimination against older people in our society but there is a significant difference between being aware of a problem and eliminating it by embedding systems in our organisations to ensure that it simply is not allowed to happen," said Mr Condon.
