London - The Scottish Parliament last night called on Westminster to scrap the 299-year-old legislation barring heirs to the throne from marrying Roman Catholics.

The "discriminatory" parts of the 1700 Act of Settlement had no place in modern society and should be repealed, MSPs said. The call came in the form of an SNP-inspired motion which won support from MSPs of all parties and which was passed with no dissent and without going to a recorded vote.
