Banks should be forced to pay for most, if not all, of the costs involved in Garda/Army security patrols for cash transports according to Fianna Fáil TD Mr Jimmy Devins.
"The decision by the banks to pay an extra €2 million towards the costs of Garda/Army cash escorts is paltry when next year it will cost around €13 million to provide this service. The extra €2 million will bring the banks' contribution to just €5.8 million, or less than half the costs involved."
"This is unacceptable when you take into account the huge profits being made in the banking sector - more than €2 billion by AIB and Bank of Ireland alone." the Sligo TD said.
"Just a few days profits from these banks would cover the costs of providing cash escorts." Mr Devins concluded.
