A man who drowned in a swimming pool at the home of the television entertainer Michael Barrymore was named by police yesterday.

Mr Stuart Lubbock (31), a wholesale butcher's supervisor from Harlow, Essex, was pronounced dead in hospital after being found at Mr Barrymore's home in Roydon, near Harlow, early on Saturday.

Police said post-mortem tests had shown that Mr Lubbock drowned. Further toxicology tests are being carried out.

The man was found a few hours after Mr Barrymore and three other people had returned from the Millennium night-club in nearby Harlow.

Mr Barrymore's agent, Ms Anne Chudleigh, said he was staying with friends. "Michael is deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy," she added. "At the moment his concern and thoughts are for the young man's family."

Police said they were keeping an open mind about whether the death was suspicious.

They said earlier it was not known if the man had been drinking, but he had decided to go for a swim in the outdoor pool in the back garden.

He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, but died at 8.32 a.m.
