A businessman who assaulted a former investor was convicted and bound to the peace for one year at Bray District Court yesterday.

Mr Patrick Doherty, of Cornerstown House, Rathmichael, Co Dublin, was also fined €1,500 for the assault on Mr Brian Palmer, of Dublin 18, in May last year.

Mr Palmer gave evidence that he was one of a number of people who had invested money with Mr Doherty, but who failed to have the money returned when requested. Mr Palmer said he had met Mr Doherty in Stillorgan Shopping Centre on May 26th last and Mr Doherty had suggested that he should visit Rathmichael.

Mr Palmer said that when he drove up to the house, Mr Doherty produced a baton and gave him a "frantic" beating through the open driver's window of the car. Mr Doherty denied inviting Mr Palmer to his home and said that he had not been beaten there.
