The deputy leader of the Green Party has been targetted by vandals who placed a burning car in her driveway in Co Carlow in the early hours of this morning.

Cllr Mary White believes she was intentionally targetted in the run-up to the general election because of her views on littering, illegal dumping and anti-social behaviour.

Gardai confirmed the incident happened at Cllr White's home in Borris, Co Carlow, between the hours of 1am and 4am. The car has been taken away by gardai who are looking for forensically examining it.

"It is highly regrettable that somebody thought this was a good way to prevent me from speaking out on the issues that affect the people of Carlow and Kilkenny," Cllr White said in a statement.

"One of those issues is anti social behaviour that has dogged many areas of the constituency. In February the Green politician was targetted when a gas cylinder collared in a pile of burning tyres was set alight beside her house.

The Carlow county councillor has complained frequently about illegal dumping, reckless driving and the destruction caused by quad bikes on Mount Leinster.
