KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, yesterday told visiting Burmese leader, Gen Than Shwe, he wants to see Burma become a member of ASEAN by next year.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has decided on a policy of non interference and "constructive engagement" with Burma, ruled by a junta which annulled general elections in 1990 that were won by a democratic opposition led by Ms Aung San Suu Kyi.
