Burma extends arrest period for Suu Kyi

The military junta in Burma has extended the house arrest of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi for one year from Nov

The military junta in Burma has extended the house arrest of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi for one year from Nov. 27, her opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) said today.

The decision to keep the 59-year-old Nobel laureate confined to her lakeside home in Yangon for another year has been condemned by rights groups and Western governments.

There has been no official confirmation from the junta, which detained Suu Kyi on May 30 last year after clashes between NLD and government supporters. She was moved to her home in September.

The NLD said the extended house arrest was imposed under a tough security law which allows anyone deemed a threat to the state to be detained for a year.
