LONDON - The British government is set to suspend the Labour MP for Glasgow Govan, Mr Mohammad Sarwar, from the parliamentary Labour Party following an internal inquiry into bribery allegations, writes Rachel Borrill.
It was revealed yesterday that the interim report into the affair, which has to be approved by Labour's ruling national executive committee next week, states there is a prima facie case against Mr Sarwar and recommends that he is suspended because of "action grossly detrimental to the party".
If Mr Sarwar is suspended he will still be a Labour MP but will face "internal exile" within the party. Mr Sarwar (55), who is Britain's first Muslim MP, is alleged to have given Stg£5,000 to a rival candidate to scale down his campaign.
