Canberra - About 150 illegal immigrants escaped from a remote Australian detention camp yesterday after two breakouts at another centre the day before and a senior official feared the action could spread further.

Immigration Minister Mr Philip Ruddock said the breakout from the Curtin centre near Derby, Western Australia, was triggered by the mass break-out on Thursday from the largest of Australia's three detention camps, Woomera in South Australia, in which three guards were injured.
