Cono Sur Viognier, Casablanca Valley, 1999 (Superquinn, £6.69). I loved this ripe, fruity Chilean - a fairly recent arrival. Luscious apricot flavours, perked up by lively acidity, make it a classic Viognier at a great price. Elizabeth Dowling says it and its twin brother, Cono Sur Merlot, went down a treat at a buffet orchestrated for a recent family get-together. I'd love it on its own, as an aperitif, or with some light, vaguely oriental food.
Allela Classico, Marques de Alella, 1999 (Searsons, Monkstown; Redmonds, Ranelagh; Gourmet Delights, Ranelagh; Michael's Wines, Clonskeagh; On the Grapevine, Dalkey; Wine Centre, Kilkenny and some other outlets, usually £7.95). Rediscovering this Spanish white, I liked it much better than in previous vintages. "Pale green and spritzy, with suggestions of fruit, flowers and honey," writes Norrie Egan, who described her nominations in musical terms. "A Liszt wine - extrovert and bubbly, a bit of a show-off." Low in alcohol, highly refreshing, made for summer.
Bergerie de l'Hortus Classique, Vin de Pays du Val de Montferrand 1999 (Wines Direct, £7.95 if you buy a case, which may be mixed). The latest vintage of an unbeatable favourite. "This aromatic wine, recommended as part of a sampler case, was an instant hit in my house," says Clare Delaney. "So much so that I ordered a full case for a family reunion." With obligingly sunny weather, "many bottles of this crisp and fruity wine were consumed on my patio". From talented Midi winemaker Jean Orliac, it's a sassy blend of Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
