A Bosnian Serb paramilitary sentenced for crimes committed during the 1992-95 Bosnian war and wanted by a UN war crimes court has been arrested in Argentina, local police said today.

A spokeswoman for Argentina's federal police who asked not to be named said Milan Lukic was detained on an international arrest warrant.

He was tried in absentia in July by a Belgrade judge for the murder of 16 Muslims in October 1992 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Yugoslav officials say Lukic headed a paramilitary group believed responsible for abducting, torturing and killing the victims, all Yugoslav nationals.

He is being held in a Buenos Aires jail and was expected to appear in court for questioning before a federal judge in the coming days, the spokeswoman said.
