The prospects of maintaining the present level of EU funding for Border counties have been undermined by a report from the Economic and Social Research Institute [ESRI], a Fianna Fail MEP has claimed.

Mr Pat "the Cope" Gallagher, MEP for Connacht/ Ulster, said he was angry at the recommendations of the ESRI's Mid-Term Review of Structural Fund Spending.

"The contention that an increase in funding would not benefit the peace process is spurious," Mr Gallagher said. "Who is to predict at this tentative stage what resources will be needed to underpin [its] lasting success?"
