A body has been recovered from a gorge in northern Australia where a Scottish tourist went missing.

The body is believed to be that of a 25-year-old holidaymaker from Inverness.

The man, who has not been named, disappeared while swimming with his girlfriend near Katherine Gorge, 217 miles south of Darwin.

The alarm was raised when he failed to resurface after getting into difficulties.

Northern Territory Police do not suspect a crocodile attack because the gorge is home to freshwater crocodiles rather than the bigger and more dangerous saltwater variety.

Last month a 24-year-old German tourist was killed by a 12ft crocodile in nearby Quaked National Park.
