The remains of four women found in Leixlip, Co Kildare, on Wednesday have been released from Tallaght Hospital to their relatives, and their funeral is expected to take place early next week.

Gardai yesterday said they remained convinced the women died from accidental poisoning caused by the build-up of fumes in their home at 12 Rinawade Grove.

The dead have been named as Frances (83), Catherine and Ruth (51) and Josephine (46) Mulrooney. They are understood to have blocked the ventilation at their home, and consequently fumes from their heating system could not escape. Garda investigators have ruled out suicide.

The final verdict on their deaths will be decided by the Kildare County Coroner, Mr Denis A Cusack. He said yesterday he would be studying closely the findings of the post-mortems on the bodies and a toxicological report prepared by Beaumont Hospital.

The Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs said it was passing on a report to the Gardai on its dealings with the women.

It is understood some of its inspectors dealt with them, but the Department refused to elaborate further.

It is understood some of the women may have been in receipt of unemployment assistance, while one or two others may have been claiming a carer's allowance. Their local health board was also paying them rent allowance.
