VATICAN CITY A leading French bishop yesterday distanced the Catholic Church in France from a report by one of its own bodies which acknowledged that condoms could be necessary to prevent the transmission of AIDS.

Bishop Albert Rouet of Poitiers, chairman of the French Bishops' Conference social commission which published the report, told Vatican radio that the media had exaggerated the issue and that his commission was not bound by the reference.
