A former French legionnaire accused of attempting to assassinate a prominent loyalist, Johnny Adair, is to be freed on £2,000 bail to attend his brother's wedding. Stephen Larkin (25), who was jailed in January 1995 for attempted murder, was granted a retrial last month.

Granting bail yesterday, Mr Justice Campbell warned Larkin against drinking too much alcohol and to be back at the Maze Prison by 7 p.m.

The former legionnaire was originally jailed for 16 years for an assassination attempt on Adair in March 1993. Adair is serving a 16 year sentence for directing terrorism.
