The PSNI are investigating an incident in Derry in which a man allegedly offered a boy sweets in a bid to lure him into a vehicle.

The eight-year-old ran home and alerted his parents after he was approached on Drumleck Drive, Derry.

Detectives investigating the attempted abduction said the suspect stopped the red vehicle shortly after 9pm yesterday.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "The driver got out of the vehicle and, after opening the rear doors, threw a bag of sweets into the vehicle and encouraged the child to get in.

"The child refused to get into the vehicle, ran home and raised the alarm." The man is described as 5ft 7in, of slim build and had a shaved head. He was wearing a pink shirt, blue jeans and black shoes.

The people carrier had fold-down arm rests and leather-type seats. Police said it had a sign on its roof which included the word "Taxi".
